"It is now acknowledged that Byzantine history no longer represents merely a post-Roman 'decline and fall' from classical civilization, but a rich millennium-long era that still has important bearings on modern events. It lies behind the divisions between 'Eastern' and 'Western' Europe that is a live issue in the European Union, the conflict in Cyprus, and Islamic attitudes to the West. This work seeks to present an accurate chronology of events that historians have chronicled in detail at some points but only sketchily at others, and to enable both students and professional scholars to access more detail than is available in general histories without the need to use difficult primary sources that are often available only in limited editions or have rarely been translated into English."
