In England and Wales, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease affects 1 in 10 people over the age of 65, which makes it one of the most common and important respiratory disorders in primary care. To date there are 600 000 people diagnosed with COPD (principally chronic bronchitis or emphysema) - and the true figure is much higher.
