"This book examines the issues of forced migration in Eastern Africa by analyzing the refugee crises in Kenya and Tanzania during the late 1990s and early 2000s. It provides the historical and contemporary economic, political, ethnic, and social factors that forced thousands of people to flee countries in the Horn of Africa and Great Lakes regions in search of sanctuary and safety. It examines both countries' adoption of harsher refugee policies and how they were connected to new economic and political regimes. It discusses the economic and social relations that refugees forged with their hosts in and outside of refugee camps, examines the role of the international community, and provides an analysis of women refugees that focuses on their agency rather than their victimization."--Jacket.
