Abstract : "The Sociology of Risk and Gambling Reader is a comprehensive anthology of classic essays on two of the most distinctive features of contemporary life: our risk-oriented society and the pervasiveness of gambling. In recent times, both work and social safety nets have become less secure, forcing individuals to assume many of the risks from states and corporations. As well, gambling-both as an institution and as a practice-has become endemic in late modern capitalist societies. The two phenomena are closely connected, and this reader paves the way for future discussions by offering a variety of sociological approaches. Sections cover sociological theories of risk and gambling, histories of gambling and its subcultures, the lived experience of gambling, and the state's role in overseeing the institutions of both risk management and gambling.
