Abstract
:
Tracing New England's literary emergence through the early national and antebellum periods, author Lawrence Buell combines intensive study of texts by such major figures as Emerson, Hawthorne, and Dickinson with analyses of works by a great range of other New England writers. The result is a new and deeper look at the rise of American literary professionalism, the meaning and significance of Neoclassicism and Romanticism in America, and the conventions and ideology of some of the period's most distinctive genres. ISBN 0-521-30206-4: $34.50.
