Abstract : This dissertation provides a new critical edition of the Greek text of the Progymnasmata of Theon. It is the first such edition to be based on a complete collation of all the Greek manuscripts of Theon, as well as on the scholarly study of the Armenian manuscripts. This dissertation also includes the first complete translation of Theon's Progymnasmata into any modern language, as well as a commentary on the Greek text and the English translation. An introductory essay fully discusses the biographical data concerning Theon himself. It shows that Theon was an orator and teacher of rhetoric in Alexandria, Egypt, around the middle of the first century of the common era. His thought and teaching were influenced by the Peripatetic tradition of rhetoric and especially by the teachings of the Stoic rhetoricians. The essay also discusses the possibility that Theon and Quintilian belong to closely related schools of thought. With regard to the Progymnasmata, the introductory essay demonstrates that the original order of this graded series of exercises in rhetoric and composition was rearranged. In the critical edition, the chapters appear, for the first time since the fifth century, in the sequence which Theon planned. The most important contribution which the dissertation makes to the study of Theon's Progymnasmata is, however, a full discussion of the textual history of the documents. This discussion treats all of the Greek manuscripts on the basis of a first-hand collation, the first time any editor of this text has worked directly with all the Greek manuscripts. Furthermore, the dissertation uses the Armenian translation of Theon's Progymnasmata by drawing on the work of noted European scholars in the fields of Armenian history and linguistics. The dissertation will be of interest to those scholars working in the history of Greek rhetoric, the history of the Hellenistic period of Greek culture, and the characteristics of Hellenistic literature and society. It will also be of interest to students of the history of early Christianity and its literature.
